Cafe Society - another total dud
What's up with movies this year? Woody Allen seems to be on the down curve of his resurgence since Match Point. He reached his peak with Blue Jasmine and has been largely boring or largely not trying to make anything much. Magic in the Moonlight was not good but it wasn't a meaningless dud like Cafe Society is. There really doesn't seem to be any point at all.
Jesse Eisenberg (the proverbial Allen stand-in) falls for Kirsten Stewart who happens to be the secretary of Steve Carrel who is a powerful someone in Hollywood who also happens to be having an affair with Steward. (BTW, why were there so many fixers in Hollywood those days?) It doesn't quite work out for Jesse and he heads back to New York and that is about it.
Woody Allen is 81. Wondering if there is another great film left in him. I hope so.
