The rugged beauty of Nea Kameni
The rugged, dark clusters of rock that make the surface of this small, young volcanic island located in the middle of the Santorini caldera in the Greek Aegean sea is beautiful in its own way like maybe the surface of the moon is. Or, closer, the big island in Hawaii.
The circular island can still vent sulfur after hundreds of years since the last explosion.
You can take a short boat ride from the main island to Nea Kameni. Then you can walk all the way up to the top of the crater — about a mile long hike in what is likely to be scorching heat.
