Using Generative Fill to extend an image

Here is a before and after version of a photo of the beautiful Dugald Steward Monument in Edinburgh, Scotland. I just happened to capture this couple blissfully hugging as the sun was setting over the city. Later on I realized I cropped way too close. I used Photoshop’s Generative Fill to really easily extend the image on the right so the couple isn’t too close to the edge for a more pleasing version on the right. This wasn’t a particularly hard edit and probably could’ve been doing without AI just fine. However, it was a lot easier and definitely quicker to do with AI.

I thought Photoshop’s implementation of this is a bit old-style. This is a challenge they will keep running into as they add new features to a decades old interface. In order to extend the image - you use the crop tool to over-select the crop area and then you use the selection tool to select the blank area on the over-selection. Then you hit ‘Generate’ on the ‘Generative Fill’ tool. Given how common this use is going to be - I’d have much appreiciated a dedicated ‘Extend’ option which would then ask you the direction and or allow you to make an arbitrary selection around the image.
