School of Rock
"School of Rock" may be the most overrated film to hit the movie screens since the multi-Oscar winning dud “Chicago”. This film specifically made to popularize on the cult like following of Mr. Black fails in the most important aspect of film-making: holding on to the viewers’ interest. The film drags on and you know exactly where it is going and you know exactly what is going to happen. Joan Cusack might win an award for playing one of the most predictable characters in a long time.
This film is about a wannabe rock star who ends up teaching a class of young preppies about rock and roll. The kids learn to love rock and roll while Jack Black learns about responsibility and affection.
The child-like force of Mr. Black works but what the film really lacks is a kid you can connect to. In a film about school kids not having even one kid you can remember is its biggest failure apart from the plot that one could have predicted by simply looking at the movie poster.
Jack Black is a good actor. However, I am not sure he is a star – as the film requires him to be. Richard Linklater, who has never really gotten his arms around a script since “Dazed and Confused” fails to create a film that one can affiliate with. This school could sure use a vacation.
