India Gate

2008-01-01-0109
I ended up at the India Gate at around 6pm on a rather hazy New Year evening. It was a day off for a lot of people so it felt like a carnival. Lots of tourists with their kids. Hanging out, having fun and enjoying rather dicey street food.

I feel ashamed to admit that I didn't really know why India Gate was built or even by whom. I am sure I learned it in a Geography or a Civics class many years ago but I surely did not remember. I had to read the Wikipedia article to get updated on it (Built in the 1920s to commemorate the 90,000 Indian soldiers who died during World War I and Afghan Wars.) I had no idea the British built it. I always thought for some reason that it was post-independence but what do you know! It does explain why the rather bare structure looks more like a poor man's Arc de Triomphe.
