Draw your own conclusions, Mr. Pogue
Daivd Pogue from the New York Times has drawn the following
conclusion about the new Apple iPad in today's paper:
Here is what I had to say in conclusion...
What rally matters is that my iPad is on its way and boy, I am excited!
...the iPad is not a laptop. It’s not nearly as good for creating stuff. On the other hand, it’s infinitely more convenient for consuming it — books, music, video, photos, Web, e-mail and so on. For most people, manipulating these digital materials directly by touching them is a completely new experience — and a deeply satisfying one. This is a pretty good conclusion, I think. Why, it is so good that I came up with it myself on January 30th, just a few days after the iPad was announced. On my post I spoke of how the iPad scores very high on consumption and not so great on creation but higher than other hand-held devices and hence creates a unique position for itself. Why, I even did a freaking info-graphic to prove my point!
Here is what I had to say in conclusion...
Apple may have created a device that draws a fine balance between creation and consumption. However, it does not replace devices on its either side. While it clearly is a new category it isn't clear whether there is a market for it.Well, nothing against Mr. Pogue. He clearly didn't draw his conclusion from my post but it is certainly interesting to me how he ended up at exactly the same place I did...only if it was two months later.
What rally matters is that my iPad is on its way and boy, I am excited!
