Governors Island

We love visiting Governors Island. A beautiful and relatively peaceful experience so close from Manhattan. If you don't tow young kids with you, that is. Otherwise it is the usual exercise in weight-lifting under duress :)

The island itself is fascinating. A military base that can only be accessed by a short, free ferry ride on weekends from May through September. You get great, unusual views of downtown New York City and rolling hills and wide open spaces!
