Woody Allen vacillates between making serious gems like Match Point, Midnight in Paris or Blue Jasmine and flippant farces like To Rome with Love or Magic in the Moonlight. It almost seems like he is passing time or just trying to keep himself gainfully employed between his real projects.
Magic in the Moonlight is a simple film about a magician who dislikes all the real magic in the world around him subscribing only to slight of hand. The magician is played by a smug Colin Firth while Emma Stone plays a magician who may or may not be performing real magic.
While far from being Woody Allen's recent great work, Magic has its moments. The dialogue is witty and the plot is intriguing enough to hold your interest for the hour and half, specially if you are an Allen fan.
