M2 MacBook Pros

New MacBook Pros based on M2 Pro an M2 Max chips

M2 MacBook Pros seem powerful but don't add value over M1 for me. And M1 MacBook Pro trade-in has has plummeted way more than I would have expected making me think I should only ever buy these on monthly installments.

While it is great that Apple is adopting a good cadence for updating core components in their laptops, this particular update seems less useful to me than I would have liked. What is even more disappointing is that the trade-in value of the 13-month old M1 MacBook Pro that I payed $3,500 is now only $1,400. And the purchase price of a new M2 MacBook Pro at a similar configuration (albeit M2 instead of M1) is about exactly the same at $3,500. I don’t get more storage, better camera, or better SD card slot at the same cost - the things that I care for the most and expected. The display remains the same as well, though I didn’t really need that upgraded.

Guess I can wait for another year to upgrade - at which point my current M1 may be worth almost nothing. Alternatively, I can upgrade and choose to pay monthly installments this time so that next time I can probably get the new machine with almost the same monthly payment. Apple may wittingly or unwittingly be pushing us into a subscription style pricing or an upgrade program similar to what they have with the phones.
