My interest in Alice in Chains has been dead from even before the lead singer Layne Staley's substance infused death in 2002. However, I just happened to stumble upon this song Check My Brain from their new album where William DuVall seems to have replaced Staley. I was just blown away by this song. Sounded far more industrial than grunge but there was a quality of pureness in it. Chains have always been derivative and this was is no different however there is still a harking, heavy and very full sound largely punk-free and borderline classic on the metallic side. Very nice.
Then of course I had to go back and buy some more of their stuff that I had practically forgotten. Jar of Flies is easily one of the best rock records out there. I was missing some songs and it seemed like a shame. Check it out - No Excuses - is alone worth the price and it only gets better.
