Opening credits on TV shows have had a great revival since Sopranos introduced its excellent, dark, brooding song almost a decade ago. Since then Justified, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Weeds and several other shows have come up with extremely compelling opening credits that almost perfectly tie with the characters and the storyline of the show.
I've recently gotten hooked on to the song for the opening credits of the british TV show Wallander. It is called Nostalgia and has been sung by an Australian folk artist called Emily Barker. It is dark, brooding, beautiful but above all - melancholy. It fits the incredibly depressing life of Wallander, the absurdly beleaguered police man, perfectly.
There are several versions of it on Youtube that one can check out. The opening credit is here.
