Slough House[2024, book #15]
The 15th book I read in 2024 was the seventh book in Mick Herron’s Slough House series. This brings back Jackson Lamb and his band of outcast spies to fight through yet another dangerous mess. While Herron’s trademark wit and sharp dialogue remain intact, I think I am beginning to tire of this series finally.
Herron’s themes of institutional incompetence, high-stakes world of spycraft, and the mundane realities of bureaucracy remains consistent. The plots have started to thin out as the series has progressed. However, the characters, beloved in their idiocy and courage, remain just as strong as ever specially now that we are so much more aware of their vulnerability.
This book, in particular, allows Herron to claim an almost forgotten plot insurance he purchased early on in the series. We knew this was coming and when it finally does, it still feels reassuring.
