Nexus[2024, book #13]

The 13th book I read in 2024 was ‘Nexus’ by Yuval Noah Harari. This is Harari’s fourth major book but, in a sense, the fourth chapter or rather the third appendix to his first great book, Sapiens. Harari describes himself as a historian and an anthropologist. ‘Nexus’ is a relatively narrower view that focuses on the history of human communication networks. In his typical style, it is well researched and written to be very approachable. Harari focuses on AI as the latest communication channel and firmly rings the alarm bell. I had been blasé about the threat of AI to our prized, if taken for granted, social structures before reading this book. However, I am convinced now that while humans have managed to destroy societies all on their own accord, AI gives them another and perhaps the most powerful tool that will help fast track this destruction. I think the narrative that reality will be the biggest casualty of AI is starting to take a hold and Nexus is a powerful reminder of the fragility of our social structures.
