I got curious about this book and the Slough House series by Mike Herron after I saw a couple of episodes of the Apple TV show based on it. Herron is a brilliant writer and brings a truly caustic British wit to bear. His characters, the rejects from from MI5, are spies forced to do menial administrative work as they have failed in some substantial way at their job.
This interesting premise fuels rather intriguing plot twists and character conflicts and makes for a really entertaining and often very funny narrative. The slow horses of course get involved in matters of importance and punch above their weight but not always in traditional ways.
It is a quick fun read as long as you don’t take it too seriously and are up to enjoying the dialogue as much or even more than the plot.
I am looking forward to reading the whole series and hopefully keeping pace with the Apple TV+ show, which seems approved for four seasons already. On a separate note, Apple TV+ continues to product great programming, on par with HBO Max (or just, Max no I guess, oh well.)
